(F 320) A brother who works as a Qur᾽ān teacher has a sufficient income to cover his basic needs but does not have enough money to pay for his mother’s surgery. Is it permissible to give him from the Zakāh funds?

Among the essential needs considered when assessing poverty and wealth are food, drink, clothing, housing, medical treatment, and security. If someone lacks these recognized basic needs and does not possess the niṣāb (minimum amount for Zakāh), they are entitled to receive Zakāh, regardless of their occupation.

Given the situation described, the brother in question is eligible for Zakāh. It can be given to him directly or to his guardian on his behalf. Fatwā issued by Dr. Khālid Naṣr
