Thanksgiving is a social holiday and not a religious one in the United States of America and most countries that celebrate it. It is an occasion for people to gather for a meal, giving thanks for the blessings they have received and the food that God has provided for them, while exchanging visits. There is no religious ritual involved, so it is strongly considered a social holiday.
In 1941, the US Congress officially designated the celebration of this holiday on the Thursday coming before the last Saturday of November each year as a social occasion.
