If a resident, not a traveler, combines two prayers due to an excuse such as rain or snow, as happened today – according to the opinion of those who allow combining for these excuses or other excuses – then he may pray the Sunnah prayers of the combined prayers. If he combines Dhuhr and ʽAṣr, he prays the pre-Sunnah prayer of Dhuhr, then combines the prayers, then prays the post-Sunnah of Dhuhr after the ʽAṣr prayer. If he combines Maghrib and ʽIshāʼ, he prays the post-Sunnah of Maghrib, then the post-Sunnah of ʽIshāʼ after combing. Imam An-Nawawiy stated in (Rawḍat aṭ-Ṭālibīn): “In combining Maghrib and ʽIshāʼ, he prays the two obligatory prayers, then the Sunnah prayer of Maghrib, then the Sunnah prayer of ʽIshāʼ, then Witr. As for Dhuhr, the correct opinion of the scholars is that he prays the pre-Sunnah of Dhuhr, then Dhuhr, then ʽAṣr, then the post-Sunnah of Dhuhr, then the post-Sunnah of ʽAṣr.” This was also reported by Imam Zakariyā al-ʼAnṣāriy, one of the Shāfiʽiy scholars, and Imam Ibn Qudāmah, one of the Ḥanbaliy scholars.
